Real Stay Firm Against Brilliant Athletico
Real Madrid were at the receiving end and endured a brilliant passage of play from Athletico. Julian Alvares was as good as it gets, firing shots at every opportunity. However, Thibaut Courtois, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best, stood like a rock, blocking everything that came his way from Athletico. Real were peppered with sublime moves but they somehow managed to survive.
Vinicius Jr. misses A Penalty

Extra Time Beckons
The match went to extra time as the tie was held at 2-2. Both teams attacked and counter-attacked with the game moving at a ferocious pace. The quality of football was mesmerising even though no goal was scored in extra time.

The match then went to a tie-breaker which did not end without a controversy. Rudiger, Mbappe, Bellingham and Valverde all scored for Real. Julian Alvares slipped while taking his penalty for Athletico and though he still scored his effort was controversially disallowed for kicking the ball twice. Marcus Llorente then missed his bid and Real Madrid managed to win the tie.
Heartbreak For Athletico
It was sheer heartbreak for Athletico. They had played extremely well and were the better team on the day but still ended up on the losing side. Fans were seen crying in the stadium, staring into oblivion and shaking their heads in disbelief.
Real March On
