Liverpool And The Art Of Survival
Liverpool have learnt the art of survival is the best line I could come up with. Battered and bruised at the Parc des Princes in Paris, home to Paris Saint Germain, the Reds under severe attack from PSG, survived and then gave it back with a telling blow. The 1st leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League between hosts PSG and Liverpool was played last night.
PSG Take Complete Control Over Liverpool..
Playing at home, PSG were going to be dangerous and no sooner than the match began Liverpool knew what was coming. It was a complete domination from the French side. The match virtually was fought between the pressing forwards of PSG and Liverpool’s man mountain goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
.. And Dominate The Reds
The stats were all revealing. PSG held a mighty 71% possession in the game and had 27 shots on goal to a mere 2 from Liverpool. It was a test of Liverpool’s defence and resilience as PSG mounted attacks after attacks on the Liverpool goal.
Alisson Becker Defies Dembele & Co
Dembele, who has been in sensational form this season led the aggression from PSG ably supported by Barcola and the Georgian Kvaratskhelia. Joao Neves too was not far behind as PSG pummeled the Liverpool goal. However, Alisson Becker defied each and every move from PSG. He blocked all what came his way and made scintillating saves to frustrate PSG. His agility and anticipation in front of goal was legendary as unrelenting pressure got the best out of him. The Liverpool defence led by Virgil van Dijk too stood stoically and put their bodies on the line to keep PSG at bay.
An Off-Colour Mo Salah
Mo Salah had a rare off day with nothing much to do. He hardly got the ball and appeared listless on the field. Arne Slot brought in Harvey Elliott in place of Salah in the 85th minute and the substitution changed the course of the match.
Elliott Scores For Liverpool Against The Run Of Play
Darwin Nunez controlled a long ball from Alisson Becker brilliantly at the edge of the PSG box. As the defenders rushed in towards Nunez he cleverly passed the ball to a rushing but in the clear Elliott, who stroked a low ball into the PSG net. Gianluigi Donnarumma PSG’s goalkeeper could not stop the ball as it slipped under him into the net. It was the 87th minute and Elliott had just spent a couple of minutes on the field.
A Huge Advantage For Liverpool
Liverpool then held sway for the remaining few minutes and won the match against the run of play. They had pulled off a remarkable victory, giving them a huge advantage going into the 2nd leg at Anfield on Tuesday night.
