The World No.2 Alexander Zverev reached the finals of the Australian Open after Novak Djokovic his opponent in the semi-final withdrew due to fitness issues. The match lasted just a set which was won by Zverev in the tie-breaker. Zverev will be up against the World no 1 Jannik Sinner on Sunday night to stake claim on the coveted trophy.
This post, however, is not about the match which Zverev played or is going to play, it is about the on court interview he gave to Jim Courier, after the semi-finals. I have to say that Zverev stood tall in the discussion and surely elevated his status as a true sportsman and a thorough, humble gentleman.
As the interview began, Zverev, first schooled the crowd for booing Novak Djokovic as he left the court. He made his displeasure known to the crowd in no uncertain terms. Zverev taking a position for his fellow tennis player was extremely appreciable. He spoke about respecting players and in particular Novak Djokovic who with 10 Australian singles titles has done more than any other player in the history of the sport.
Zverev further went on to add that he respected Djokovic the most on the pro circuit simply for what he had achieved and also for his humility in success. He mentioned how approachable Djokovic was and how he himself and sought help from him in his difficult times.
Zverev also played down his achievements off late and the consistency which has become the hallmark of his game. The German remained pleasantly modest and credited his astonishing progress to his father and brother, who have been coaching him.
It was an excellent interview from Zverev, which has won rave reviews and admiration from players, fans and critics alike.
As far as the tennis is concerned Zverev would be challenging the defending champion Jannik Sinner. The German will give it all as a true pro and take it from me he will be gracious in defeat and downright humble in victory. We will find it on Sunday.
