Memories of Cole Palmer’s Thunderous Strike Against Spain

Cole Palmer’s thunderous strike against Spain 10 minutes before the final whistle in the Final of the Euro Championships a few months ago was testimony to the quality of the player. He brought England on equal terms and gave them a chance in the few minutes he was on the pitch. Though England lost that Final, Cole Palmer’s brilliance remained firmly etched in my mind. Without a doubt, the Chelsea striker was one of the best in the World and so he proved it yet again last evening.

High Flying Seagulls…

Brighton and Hove Albion were undefeated this season when they travelled to Stamford Bridge to face mighty Chelsea. The confident Seagulls drew first blood with a well-directed header from Georginio Rutter in just the 7th minute after some poor defence from Chelsea. The early breakthrough though was short-lived as a Cole Palmer storm was about to hit Brighton long and hard.

In the 21st minute Nicholas Jackson, the young Senegalese, got away from the charging Goalkeeper and unselfishly set up Cole Palmer with a fine pass. Palmer struck with ease and Chelsea had equalised. 7 minutes later a bit of indiscretion from Brighton resulted in a penalty and Cole Palmer scored his 10th penalty for Chelsea in the EPL. The Blues were ahead. 3 minutes later an infringement on Madueke outside the box resulted in a free kick to Chelsea. Cole Palmer produced a brilliant left-footer laced with power and precision curling away to the left of the Brighton Goalkeeper, evading his outstretched hand. Palmer had scored a hattrick.

Ten minutes later J Sancho induced a quick run from Palmer. The Seagulls were caught unawares as Palmer struck another precise left footer, piercing the little gap between the goalpost and the keeper flawlessly. It was 4 for Palmer and had he not hit the post earlier, he would have had 5 in the game. In the interim Brighton got one back from Quomah Baleba and at halftime, the scoresheet Read 4-2 and so it remained till the end of the match.

Full-Time National Duty Beckons Palmer

Palmer’s unprecedented performance had helped Chelsea take down a tough opponent.  His control on the ball, exquisite timing of his runs and the quality of strikes in terms of precision, direction and power are great signs for Chelsea. His presence is ominous for the opposition. England too have discovered a fine talent and I am certain that he would start the upcoming games for the national side rather than coming as a substitute at fag ends of important contests.
