Sport Is Not Just Entertainment
Sport is not about entertainment alone. It is in fact packed with life hacks and a closer scrutiny will suggest that sport many a times, inspires, uplifts, rejuvenates, levels up and provides great lessons on life. What transpired at the Santiago Bernabeau ( home to one of the greatest football clubs of all times, Real Madrid ) last night is a true reflection of my statements above.
Real Madrid & Bayern Munich Lock Horns
The setting was the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final between the two giants of Football not only in Europe but in the world, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The first leg was a 2-2 draw in Munich a few days ago and it was all to play for when Real Madrid hosted Bayern on their home turf, their impregnable strong hold. A fierce clash was expected and so it happened, with a few controversies too.
An Unbelievable Manuel Neuer
Manuel Neuer, Bayern’s captain and Goalkeeper was in splendid form as he denied Real Madrid whenever they threatened to move ahead. A stinger from Vinicius Jr was brilliantly parried away by Neuer diving to his left and then flung himself to his right to deflect a free kick from Rodrygo. There was also some luck going Bayern’s way as Vinicius Jr either found the woodwork or missed by a whisker. Bellingham and Rodrygo too were good, created chances but Neuer came in the way each time. The first half was all about Neuer’s heroics.
A Stunner From Davies Stuns Bernabeau
Real Madrid dominated possession as the pace of the game picked up in the second half with Bayern showing great intent with their Canadian forward Alphonso Davies in fine form. The 23-year old produced the breakthrough with a brilliant run on the left and then unleashed an astonishing strike beating Lunin ( Real’s Goalkeeper ) to his left. It was 68 minutes on the clock and Bayern were ahead. A goal, so crucial, speaks volumes of Davies’ calibre. He was sensational.
Joselu Brace & The Same Old Unflinching Real Spirit
Real then went on the offensive and launched a desperate array of attacks on the Bayern goal. Neuer who had been brilliant so far, inexplicably failed to gather a harmless ball. The ball hit his chest and fell on the feet of Joselu who made no mistake. It was 1-1 in the 88th minute. The desperation had paid off. Joselu the 34-year old Spaniard kept lurking near the Bayern goal looking for opportunities, which came by again in the first minute of stoppage time ( 90’+ 1’ ). Rodrygo moving forward from the left, centered for Joselu to strike home in front of goal. The goal was allowed after an offside check and Real Madrid clinched the lead. Santiago Bernabeau virtually came down when the referee blew the final whistle. From the brink of elimination Real Madrid had forced themselves into the Champions League final for the 18th time.
Bayern Munich Played Their Hearts Out
Bayern played well and had their chances too, but the sheer tenacity of Real Madrid and their never say die attitude, literally forced a result in their favour. Joselu had to make 2 simple touches, but the moves leading to the goals were exhibition of great teamwork, optimism and self belief. Real were not going to lose, this was firmly etched in their minds. Bayern just had 3 more minutes to see the game through, but just could not hold on and suffered.
Real’s victory has a great life lesson embedded in it. Kudos to their Manager Carlo Ancelotti too, for shaping a set of fine players into an even better and formidable unit.
Going For No. 15
Real Madrid will play another German side Borussia Dortmund ( who beat a lacklustre PSG 1-0 in both legs ) in the Finals and look favourites to win their 15th title. Absolutely staggering numbers for the warrior Los Blancos from Spain. The final will be played at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London on the 1st of June. An epic encounter instore.
