Formula 1 : The Spread Of Motorsport’s Showpiece

Gone Are The Prejudices

There was a time when Formula 1 Racing was seen through a prejudiced lens. It was considered to be a sport for the elite and for the exclusive few who occupied the upper echelons of society. The reach of Formula 1 was limited too and a large population of sport lovers across the world were unable to have a feel of Formula 1 and found it to be inaccessible and beyond their confines. But times have  changed and the  popularity  of Motorsport and Formula 1 in particular has witnessed a massive jump. The reasons are several for this rise and have motivated me to write this post today.

F1 – Far & Wide

The 2024 season ( which is due to begin on 2nd March with the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir Circuit ) is going to witness 24 races within a span of 9 months, from March 2 to December 8. The venues are scattered around the globe covering every continent on the planet. These diverse venues from the Middle East to Australia, Europe, Asia, South America, the USA and Canada has made the Sport inclusive and accessible to a wide population of the world.

The Local Flavour

Efforts have also been made to engage with the local audience and  develop  every race as an event with a distinct local flavour and identity. This has gone a long way in building a long lasting relationship of Formula 1 with the local audience and has developed their enthusiasm for the Sport in a big way.

Diverse Challenges

From the point of  view of racing alone, every venue offers a unique challenge to the Formula 1 drivers. The diversity in the weather, atmospheric conditions and the construction and the layout of the circuit, become critical factors in strategising for the race. This adds to the intrigue of the sport and the element of surprise that stems from it, which captures the attention of the viewer and holds on to it.

” Drive To Survive “- The Popular Netflix Series

Man & Machine At Their Best

Formula 1 is an adrenaline pumping, highly competitive sport which tests the limits of man and machine both individually and  as a team. Cars outpacing each other at phenomenal speeds and manouevring treacherous turns in pursuit of the chequered flag, make for an exhilarating experience. The car manufacturers ( called the constructors ) invest massively in R & D to push the limits of the cars, making them more powerful and aerodynamic, year after year. Cars are able to touch speeds as high as 350 km/ hr. The drivers too are the most skilful behind the wheel and despite  the risks involved in the sport, churn out absolutely compelling performances race after race, resulting in an ever growing adulation for the sport.

Slick Broadcasting Accentuates Growth

Seamless and much improved Broadcasting Technology for Live Races has made the Formula 1 reach out to every knook and corner of the globe, making viewer experience  much thrilling, sophisticated and enjoyable. So much so that every race records millions of viewers making F1 races as one of the most viewed sporting events in the world. Post 2016, once Liberty Media took ownership of Formula 1, the social media presence of Formula 1 has been galvanised and the hugely popular Netflix Series ‘Drive to Survive’ has  further accentuated the growth and acclaim of the sport.

Formula 1 is enthralling and is spreading fast and furious. Its over to Sakhir in Bahrain now for the first race on March 2.

  1. Now that motor-sports is being promoted by several countries in the world , it is proof enough of the increasing popularity of this once very exclusive , expensive and monopolized sport.
Riz Khan has very aptly highlighted how this tough, thrilling and challenging sport is now set to create waves and adulation from fans the world over no less than what we see in popular sports such as tennis , football and cricket. So it is indeed good to read this narrative by a watchful and good sports – writer on an emerging phenomenon in international sports.
