Qatar Defend Asian Crown  As Jordan Win Hearts

History Made At The Iconic Lusail Stadium

The Lusail Stadium played host to another Final when the Maroons ( the home team Qatar ) locked horns with the Gentlemen ( the Jordanians ) in the AFC Asian Cup crowning tussle. The Maroons known as the Al- Annabi were defending their crown and the Jordanians, the An-Nashamas were first time Finalists playing beautiful football right through the tournament. It was a great tussle, but the Maroons held on to become back to back Champions in 20 years. The iconic Lusail Stadium was  witness to yet another prized piece of history.

The Nervous An-Nashamas & The Gritty Al-Annabis

The First timers An-Nashamas  looked nervous from the start, a bit overwhelmed by the occasion and took some time to settle down. However, Akram Afif, the brilliant forward of the Al-Annabis was brought down in the box, a penalty was conceded  and the Maroons went ahead. Post the break the Jordanians played some spectacular football and pounded the Qatari defence and eventually scored to bring parity in the match. Musa Tamari and Yazan Al Naimat, the two strikers of Jordan were impressive right through the tournament and again they showed how good they were.

The Crown Well Defended

The An-Nashamas ( The Gentlemen ) were making a match of it, but then the cruel nerves surfaced at the wrong time. Some poor defending gave the Maroons another penalty and Akram Afif scored again. Qatar held on bravely as Barsham their goal keeper produced some brilliant saves to keep the Jordanians at bay. With the match slipping out of their hands, the An-Nashamas  began to lose grip and once again conceded a penalty ( the third of the match ) in stoppage time. Akram Afif, yet again, scored to give Qatar an unassailable lead. It was victory for the Maroons and the Crown had been well defended.

A Brilliant Afif

Akram Afif scored a hat-trick and emerged as the tournament’s highest goal scorer with 8 goals. Whatever I have seen of him, Afif is a fantastic player, blessed with skill, speed and finesse infront of goal. He might just be on his way to Europe to play in the most competitive leagues in the world. Barsham, the goal keeper of the Maroons was also in fine form and was adjudged the Keeper of the Tournament.

Jordan Win Hearts

The An-Nashamas left with their heads held high as fans celebrated their success at the Asian Cup. Their performance particularly against mighty South Korea in the semi-finals was magical as they produced some breathtaking, fluent football. The tournament would also be remembered for the performance of the Palestine Team which made it to the knockout stage.

The Gulf is Narrowing

It was a fell fought tournament and the quality of Football was nothing short of spectacular at times. The gulf between the Asian Teams and the strong Europeans and South Americans is slowly narrowing. The World Cup 2026 could well be a real Humdinger !!

  1. A very important message Riz Khan gives in this write-up of a well-contested football final is that high class and quality Asian teams are now emerging in the international scenario to challenge the supremacy and dominance of the much vaunted teams of Europe and South American countries. Very well-said !👌👌
