Yashasvi Jaiswal: It Happens Only In Bollywood Movies ?…Not Any More

Yashasvi Jaiswal

A Giant Swell of a Wave

I read an article by Venkata Krishna B dated 13th October 2018 highlighting the struggles of Yashasvi Jaiswal, the incredible talent he possessed and how exciting was the future ahead of him. Yashasvi Jaiswal has proved everything right whatever Venkata Krishan had envisaged. The brilliant southpaw is not only making waves in International Cricket, he is causing a giant swell with his audacious batting and steely temperament. A sensational double ton against England in the ongoing test match. And make no mistake he is just 22.

The story of Yashasvi Jaiswal is straight out of a Bollywood Movie, but lo and behold, it is a real story and however implausible it may sound, it is factual and gives me goosebumps.

The Struggle Begins…

Hailing from Bhadohi, about 70 km from Varanasi, Yashasvi left home at age 10 for Mumbai to become a cricketer. Unable to get a place to stay, he managed to get accommodation and employment in a dairy shop, but then, was thrown out as he played cricket more than he worked. With nowhere to live, his Uncle somehow managed to find a place for him at the Muslim United Club at Azad Maidan, where he started playing regularly while living in a tent where the groundsmen lived.

…And A Good Samaritan Arrives

To conjure a meal in the night which he cooked in candlelight, Yashasvi sold fruits and ‘panipuris’. The struggle was on and it took 3 years of living in tents before the youngster’s talent was seen by his eventual mentor and guardian Jwala Singh, who ran a cricket academy. Yashasvi’s guiding light and good Samaritan had arrived and then it was no looking back.

A Story of Resolute Pursuits

The battle must  have been much much deeper and painful than the paragraph written above. But Yashasvi endured every bit of it to fulfil a dream he so badly wished. I am at my wits end to understand the challenges which Yashasvi must have faced in those trying times and that too at such a tender age. No wonder, such resolute pursuits and unrelenting determination never go unrewarded. Jwala Singh was not only amazed by the young boy’s talent but his unflappable courage and gritty demeanour inspired him too.

A Seasoned Yashasvi

The double ton scored by Yashasvi against England is a natural outcome of the unprecedented grind that he has gone through. His hard days have seasoned him no end and it would be fair to say that he would be more than willing to take up cudgels on the field against any opposition in the world. ( I wonder what  that Dairy shop owner would tell Yashasvi if he met him now ?? )

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a tenacious wonder, a true inspiration.

  1. In this short and concise blog Riz Khan has picked up on the story of this young batsman and his meteoric rise to fame now.
The narrative highlights the life struggles of this young man, his fondness and determination for eventually making his mark in this game. And that he got the right backers who recognising his talent supported and pushed him to where he is now. To them indeed goes a lot of credit for his achievements.
