An Incredible Game at the Chinnaswamy
It was an incredible game of Cricket, moving like a pendulum from one corner to the other. The match was ceasing to end so unprecedented it was and eventually, it took 2 super overs to break the deadlock. India prevailed over the fighting Afghans, outthinking the challengers when it really mattered. The packed Chinnaswamy witnessed one of the finest T20 matches ever played amidst a stunning ‘RRR’ show.
I wanted to write about the match immediately after it ended, but I realised it would be better to wait for a couple of days, let it sink and then write.
A Brilliant Rohit – Rinku Partnership
India lost 4 wickets very early when they came out to bat. Captain Rohit who had an abysmal series so far, was joined by the ever-improving, most impressive and my favourite Rinku Singh. The Afghans did not get a look in after that, as an imperious Rohit and the indomitable Rinku sent the bowlers to the cleaners and set the fielders on a leather hunt. Rohit was in sublime form, playing effortlessly while Rinku played a supporting role to his captain but showed forceful intent too. Both the RRs ensured no further loss of wickets. Rohit got a hundred, and Rinku a good fifty as both combined to stitch an unconquered 190-run partnership to close out the innings with a formidable ( almost match-winning) total of 212.
The Muscle Flexing Naib
Afghanistan have been striving hard in this series but have been outdone by a better side and surely enough they wanted to prove a point. The talented Rahmanullah Gurbaz got a quick 50 and so did his opening partner Ibrahim Zadran. The striking by both players was flawless and an exhibition of both power and finesse. In the future, these two young players and a few others from the Afghan camp will be a handful. But Gulbadin Naib, the muscle-flexing powerful striker got the Afghans back into the match with his fearless hitting and ensured that the match went into a super over.
A Brave Ravi Bishnoi Wins It For India
Gurbaz got into the act again and he along with Nabi set a fighting 16-run target for India. Rohit once again got India almost home with two lovely strikes but couldn’t finish off and the super over could not break the deadlock, leading to another super over. India got 11 and the Afghans needed just 12 to seal the match. But yet again a twist ensued with a master stroke from Rohit. Ravi Bishnoi was introduced to bowl. His slow leg breaks sent the timings off gear and Ravi had two wickets in 3 balls to clinch the match. A brave decision from Rohit and some courageous bowling from Ravi Bishnoi ensured India’s victory, much to the elation of the massive crowd.
It was indeed a Rohit, Rinku and Ravi show. Rohit deservedly got the Player of the Match and Shivam Dube was declared the Player of the Series.
A Host of Memories the RRR Way
Interestingly the match had a bit of spice too, with some controversies emanating from Rohit’s retired hurt call in the first super over and Mohd Nabi running a couple from a deflection off his own body. The spectators had their monies worth and a bag full of pleasant RRR memories.
