2023 : A  Defining Year  For Indian Sports

A Scintillating Year for Sports

The year 2023 will go down in history as the most successful year for Indian Sports. The trajectory of the progress of Sports in  India was always showing an upward trend, but the year 2023 has seen  India breaking into a select band of countries which have the potential to not only raise quality talent in various sports but also dominate them. It is not just about Cricket anymore. India is well on its course to becoming a Vibrant Sporting Nation.

An Awesome Indian Performance

The  Indian performance at the Asian Games in Hangzhou was a reflection of the developing domination of India in Asia as the Indian Contingent garnered a record-breaking 107 medals including 28 Gold, 38 Silver and 41 Bronze Medals. The haul was unprecedented as new benchmarks were set and world records broken by driven, determined and tenacious Indian men and women. The most satisfying feature of India’s performance was the spread of medals across 22 sporting disciplines.

A Rich Haul

Medals in Archery, Athletics, Bridge, Boxing, Badminton, Chess, Cricket, Equestrian, Golf, Hockey, Kabaddi, Roller skating, Rowing, Sailing, Sepaktakraw, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Wrestling, and Wushu, were testimony to the fact that interest in various sports had taken roots in  India and it was spreading in good measure. India did particularly well in Shooting ( breaking World Records ), Athletics, Boxing and Archery, while stamping their authority in Cricket and Hockey. However, getting medals in sports previously unheard of like Equestrian and Wushu was pleasing. Even the performance of the Squash Team received massive accolades for their fighting temperament and the zeal to win. It was truly an all-around performance at the Asian Games and it has to be said that India won’t be pushovers at the Paris Olympics in 2024. A rich haul awaits.

A Dominant India

In Cricket too, India excelled in all formats and at one point were no.1 in all three formats which goes to show how dominant India was. The IPL was once again a hugely successful tournament and though India lost the Final of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup to their nemesis Australia, India still had a mighty successful cricket calendar. Football also witnessed a resurgent India, making decent progress and surprising strong Asian Teams. With the ISL also developing interest in Football in the country, it won’t be long before India makes sweeping gains in  Football as well.

Awaiting 2024

The Sporting infrastructure in India is improving and so is the inclination of young boys and girls to take up a sport as an all-time profession. This augurs well for us and I will be watching with bated breath as  Indian sportspersons take up the cudgels against the best in 2024.

Just Play !!
