Google : The World’s Search Engine : Turns 25

25 Years Or Eternity

It is difficult to believe that Google has turned 25. It seems it has been around for an eternity, such has been the influence of  Google on our daily lives.  Much beyond its ‘ search ‘ functionality, Google has not only revolutionised ‘information seeking’, but has touched so many aspects of day-to-day living. Be it travel or communication, you might just involuntarily reach out to Google. Fittingly enough, seeing Google’s profound impact, the Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster, in 2006, officially recognised ‘Google’  as a ‘verb’.

A Chance Encounter

With billions of searches a day, Google has turned into a Colossus, an irresistible giant and that too after a chance encounter between two visionary young men, laying its foundation in the dormitory of Stanford University. Larry Page, wanting to study at Stanford incidentally bumped into Sergey Brin, a Ph.D. student at the  University who led Larry Page around the campus.  Two brilliant computer scientists then came together to develop a search engine, first from the students’ dormitory and then in a garage at Menlo Park, California. The garage was Google’s first official address.

Resolute Brin & Page Establish Google

The prototype was successfully developed and then at the right time came vital investment as Andy Bechtolsheim ( Founder of Sun Microsystems ) in August 1998 brought in $100K and eventually Google Inc. was born, dramatically impacting millions of lives all over the globe. The resolute persistence and untiring hard work of Sergey Brin and Larry Page paid off in good measure.

A Massive Contribution to Society

As Google progressed, the internet shrunk the world. Information flowed. Knowledge became accessible. Ideas were easily exchanged and  Language was no barrier. It is hard to imagine that Google searches are available in more than 150 languages across the globe. The right to information and the right to knowledge of every human being became possible with Google. This contribution to society alone is massive and has led to progress in no uncertain terms.

There is a Dark Side Too

Whatever may have been the vision of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google undoubtedly has outperformed that vision in a big way. Notwithstanding the revenue it generates and the employment it creates all over the world, the ease with which it has infused the lives of people is a great gift to mankind. Of course, some may disagree. There is always a dark side and easy access to anything anywhere has led to abuse too. Matured usage of the Internet and measured and monitored exposure to children is the way forward.

Several Jubilees In The Offing

In my opinion though, very pointedly,  it has to be said, that the benefits resulting from Google far outweigh the pitfalls and that is why it appears as if Google has been there forever. Maybe something better might just churn out someday, but Google hopefully will last several Jubilees. The silver one is just the beginning.
