Nature’s Fury

How often we take nature for granted as if it was under an obligation to serve us. As if it has been ordained for nature to be at our beck and call,  to make our lives comfortable, even at its expense. Nature and its bounties are indeed for the human race to sustain itself, to live and to thrive, but not to the detriment of it.

Nature has a limitless capacity to return the favour if brushed on the wrong side. Its ferocity can be chilling which has been seen several times over in the calamities gone by and yesterday night, a mini trailer of which left me numb and pushed me to write this post today.

The clouds had been gathering since morning, with a hint of rain on the horizon. As the day progressed and a cool evening beckoned, the clouds had gained density and appeared thick, as I looked up the sky, post dinner. The night grew and so did the weather. Rain with lightning interspersed, began to intensify but remained within manageable proportions. But then, halfway through dawn, nature just let loose its fury.

Massive thunder followed a heavy burst of lightning, time and again as if sequenced like a program. The walls shook and the windows crackled. The clatter from the thunder increasing by the minute, deafening ear drums and rattling the heart. The ones in deep sleep sat on the bed with a prayer on their lips. The sound of something being sheared or torn apart appeared seriously brutish. Eventually, the aggression calmed down. Our prayers were answered. There was some respite.

It was an unprecedented experience and though I have seen lots of rain and thunder during my 16 years of stay in Mumbai, my familiarity with the ongoings of yesterday night was found undoubtedly frugal. I soon realised how powerful nature could be and that we are nothing but mere mortals vis-a-vis the force of nature and that we need to respect it with all humility and modesty.

We need to be conscious of the environment around us, and live a more environmentally sustainable life with fewer attempts to abuse the environment and more stringent efforts to protect it, is a lesson learnt.

  1. The latest blog of Riz Khan is so apt for the situation that just happened yesterday….The ferocity of nature could be felt when the continuous downpour and lightening with deafening noise left a heavy impact on one and all.Keep up the good work Riz.
