A Newbie From JAL
Have you ever heard of a Commercial Airline offering Clothes on Rent to its Passengers? Howsoever unusual it may sound, the news is factual. This new service has been introduced by JAL ( Japan Airlines ) for its International travellers. The service has taken hassle-free ‘ Sustainable Tourism ‘ and the term ‘ Travel Light ‘to another level.
Rent A Wardrobe
JAL has presented a scenario where an airline ticket assures you of your major travel requirements. The passengers need not worry about their packing and can easily travel without their burgeoning suitcases. They can rent their sets of clothing, which would be delivered to their destination. Starting at $27 for two bottoms and three tops, the travellers can rent a maximum of 8 outfits from a variety of choices in different styles and sizes to suit the occasion and their mood.
Environment Friendly & Hassle Free Travel
The whole idea behind this unique offering by JAL is to help passengers travel light and consequently reduce weight on planes. As per the airline, a 1 kg reduction in weight, may lead to reduced fuel emissions of up to 0.75 kg on a Tokyo-New York Flight. Travelling lighter may therefore lead to saving fuel and the environment as a whole. Many travellers have supported sustainable travel and tourism and hence this service by JAL allows them to implement the same.

The Premise Questioned
JAL has put a lot of thought behind this service, but there are several who have extremely divergent views on the matter and have questioned not only the premise of this service but also its feasibility and implementation.
Diverse Opinions
As per the critics, one major issue with this service is the mindset of the traveller. How many would be prepared to wear rented clothes? Though they would be dry cleaned and sanitised, there would always be a reluctance, particularly coming to risks of infections and other health issues. The cleaning and maintenance of clothes would lead to carbon footprints too. Also, people who have styling preferences which are imperative for their self-confidence may never reach out to rental clothing.
Many Takers For The Service Too
The reservations mentioned above have a sound footing and need to be pondered about. However, there is no doubt that there would be several travellers who would jump on this service, simply for hassle-free travel. For many packing clothes and carrying suitcases is stressful and also there would be many travellers who would love to contribute to the environment by subscribing to this service.
Beginning of A New Era
JAL has come out with a novel idea and in a way it is the beginning of a new era in travelling. Maybe this is what the future holds for us. Whether this service can conjure the benefits it has envisaged, will be there for all to see as it trials for a year up to August ‘24.
‘ Any Wear, Anywhere ‘, keep looking for this service when you travel JAL next.
