History Created @ Roland Garros
Roland Garros bore witness to History being made on its Red Clay as Serbian Novak Djokovic quelled Norwegian Casper Ruud’s challenge to win the French Open on Sunday to record his 23rd Grand Slam Title, the highest ever in the history of Men’s Tennis. The Philippe Chatrier Court stood in applause of the great Champion as he received his 23rd Grand Slam Trophy from Yannick Noah.
Novak In Control of Record Books
Novak has been far ahead of the current lot of tennis players and though he is about to turn 37, he looks in pristine form to add a few more Grand Slams to his already swelling kitty. He is in control of the record books and is writing his own chapter. Though records are meant to be broken, Novak by the time he retires and hangs his boots, would have written something insurmountable. It would need a super human effort to get past him.
The Perfect Player
In my opinion ( though I am a great fan of Roger Federer ) Novak Djokovic is the near perfect player to have embraced the Game ever, and my reasons for his flawless game make up the crux of my post today.
An Unassailable Return of Serve
The Great John McEnroe stated that Novak Djokovic has the Best Return of Serve he has ever seen and I do agree with him. Novak’s impeccable service return is a big weapon in his armoury. Big booming serves are returned with consummate ease from difficult angles, neutralising them and making it difficult for the opponents, giving Novak a big advantage on tight occasions. On Sunday too, Casper Ruud was serving well, but everything was getting back at him. At times he felt exasperated at the quality of Novak’s return.
Incredible Court Coverage
Novak can retrieve the ball from anywhere. His court coverage is unmatchable to say the least, simply incredible. To pass him on court takes that one extra short which leads to all the errors. The opponents have to try that extra bit to make winners. They have to find those extremely tight angles to get past Novak, which is risky and error prone. Novak is able to reach anywhere and keep the ball in play. It is extremely difficult to keep him out of a point and undoubtedly this ability of his is a major reason for his outstanding success.
An Error Free Game
Novak has the ability to keep the ball in court. He hardly makes errors. Both his forehand and backhand are strong. His play at the net is as good as anyone and his defiance in big rallies from the baseline is simply faultless. It is not easy to push him off the court or beat him at the net.
A Strong Serve
Novak has worked on his Serve over the years and has made it one potent weapon of his. Many a times his relentless serving has bailed him out at critical points. His success at the grass courts of Wimbledon in particular may well be attributed to his strong serve. To break his service takes a mammoth effort, which is proof enough of his domination on the court.
Tenacious to the Core
‘ Victory is for the Most Tenacious’ cannot fit in more perfectly in the case of Novak Djokovic. Apart from his error free skills as a Tennis player, his unflinching tenacity on court, makes him a mighty tough competitor. His tough days while growing up and his dogged determination to make something out of his life have held him in good stead. His ability to stay grounded and his humility amongst his phenomenal success speaks volumes of the Man he is.
Novak Djokovic continues to inspire not only with his conquests on Tennis courts but also with his off court conduct, which makes him a True Ambassador of the Sport. What a player…perfection personified !!!
