They appear simple and unassuming, humble and demure, modest and unpretentious girls, but just put them in a boxing ring they unambiguously transform into skillful, confident, brave and highly combative boxers, capable enough of knocking the blues out of their opponents.
India’s Golden Haul
The Women’s Boxing World Championship was held in New Delhi last month, wherein India amassed a rich haul of Gold Medals. Four of our very own pugilists broke the record barriers and emerged victorious in various categories at the Championship. Nitu Ghanghas, Saweety Boora, Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen were crowned World Champions. Nikhat becoming the only female boxer after the legendary Mary Kom to have won two gold medals at the World Championships. An extremely proud moment for the country indeed.
Fighting Their Own Battles
To beat the best in the World and that too in a tough combative sport is no mean achievement. Nitu and Saweety from Haryana, Lovlina from Assam and Nikhat from Hyderabad had to fight their own battles too to reach this far. Their journey tough as ever is a great script for drawing inspiration in life.
Overcoming Prejudices
These simple, unassuming girls had to fight the initial prejudices which in itself was a massive challenge. Their gender and the type of sport they chose, were an unacceptable mix. Their families and the parents in particular, have to be saluted for backing them to the hilt in surmounting the tough initial roadblocks.
Our Real Stars
The punishing training schedules, fitness regimens, weight management ( its critical in boxing ), unwavering discipline for long periods of time, take a lot out of the athlete. It requires both physical and mental strength to survive the tough ordeal. We, therefore can just imagine the struggles Nita, Saweety, Lovlina and Nikhat have gone through. For me they are the real stars who need to be followed and celebrated.
A Decisive Shift
The conquests of these 4 girls is also a reflection of the unquestionable change which is well and truly and decisively underway in our country in terms of gender equality and women empowerment. Kudos to their parents for raising their girls the way they have, good enough for making India proud.
I am sure the World Champions will not rest until they have a go at the Olympics slated to be held in Paris in 2024.
Tough Indian girls…the world beware !!
