Modest Kane

He is one of the legends of the game, but we hardly hear him speak. His statistics indicate unparalleled consistency, but he manages only a wry smile. His skill is laudable, his technique is exceptional, and his temperament is unflinching, but still, his acknowledgement is muted. Kane Williamson, the cricketer par excellence from New Zealand is an epitome of modesty almost to the point of being embarrassed by his conquests.

“ A thirst to be phenomenal – but not at anyone else’s expense “. These are the words of Pacey Depina who coached Kane Williamson at the Tauranga Boys’ College where Kane studied and learnt his cricket. This statement to describe Kane is a great pointer to the kind of person Kane wanted to become and how successful he has been in ensuring his development on the lines of Pacey’s statement.

With his sublime talent and a thirst for runs, Kane made his debut for New Zealand as a teenager in 2010 against India and since then he has been the lynchpin of New Zealand batting and last month he surpassed Ross Taylor to become the highest run-getter for New Zealand in Test Matches. He led New Zealand to the 2021 World Test Championship and has been instrumental in making New Zealand a formidable side in all forms of Cricket. In ICC Tournaments in particular New Zealand have been exceptional performers under Kane Williamson.

The big statistics notwithstanding, Kane Williamson’s conduct on and off the field has always been intriguing. His inexpressive demeanour is a great quality. Whatever may be the situation of the game he remains absolutely unflustered. You cannot get on his nerves, which sometimes may be a big concern for the opposition. How much you try to get him edgy, nothing seems to bother him, almost monastic-like. He has seldom been seen getting into an argument with any player. That wry smile and the soft voice are powerful enough to disarm the toughest oppositions. No wonder Kane Williamson has won great respect for his batting exploits and personal conduct alike from all and sundry.

There is great learning which can be derived from Kane Williamson. Recently he scored 3 back to back Test centuries. On all the 3 occasions New Zealand were in trouble, but Kane not only got them out of the hole they were in, but he also guided them to victories in all the 3 Test Matches. It was simply brilliant from Kane. His performance was the one that made the difference. There were no big celebrations from Kane  Williamson, but just the good old wry smile. His humility is astounding, which is such a telling lesson from Kane’s life.

Kane Williamson is an exceptional story. Truly inspiring. Modesty personified.
