Novak Djokovic : The Relentless Serb

The Glittering  Night

The glittering Melbourne skyline appeared soaked in the  bluish charm and scenic delight of the Rod Laver Arena. The atmosphere was captivating as the Men’s Final of the Australian Open 2023 between Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas unfolded infront of an extremely involved and passionate audience.

A Controversy to Handle

Novak Djokovic chasing his record 10th Australian Open Title and his 22nd Grand Slam Championship had  a difficult few weeks upto the Final. There were fitness concerns with his hamstring after the Adelaide tournament and then just before the Semi Finals a controversy erupted with his father  and brother at the centre of it.  They had unknowingly obliged a group of fans for a picture  who were carrying Russian Flags. This drew criticism from all corners. Novak’s father and brother skipped Novak’s Semi Final match. The controversy subsided only when Novak came strongly in support of his family and reiterated how they were unwittingly found on the wrong side and that  they were much against any kind of War. So there were pressures both on and off the court when the Final began.

A Comfortable  Win

It would be difficult to find parallels to Novak Djokovic when it comes to mental toughness. With so much going around, losing focus would be normal, but Novak’s focus was absolutely unflinching to say the least. Inspite of the best efforts of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak held firm and thwarted any and every challenge from the Greek. The match though did have its moments and two tie-breaks also, Novak never looked under any sort of threat. With his ability to win more points than others, Novak hardly loses tie breaks and overcame Tsitsipas in straight sets to record, in my opinion, a rather comfortable win, his record setting 10th title in Melbourne.

A Rush of Emotions

The winning moment was rather subdued as Novak raised his hand acknowledging the crowd and went over to shake hands with Tsitsipas. It was just the calm before the storm. Novak then went up to meet his family and team in the box and then as he met them, particularly his mother, brothers and coach, a sea of emotions were let loose. A lot was bottled inside as  Novak wept inconsolably. Many in the audience began to cry too. Novak went down on his knees as if all his strength had evaporated. All the hardwork, the pain and agony of years of  struggle had suddenly come to the fore. Novak with all his exploits on the court and being one of the greatest players of all times, was still human and that showed as the evening aged on the Rod  Laver Arena.

Novak : A Living Template for Success

We also should not forget the events of  last year’s Australian Open, when Novak was not allowed to participate in the tournament and was deported from Australia. He was not vaccinated for Covid and hence had to leave the country without playing the tournament . It was unprecedented.  However he was back this year and won the Championship. This is what Novak is made of. His life is truly a lesson and a story so inspiring. He dreamt, believed in himself, worked tirelessly, persevered relentlessly, handled success with maturity and remained humble and grounded. He is a template when it comes to pursuing your dreams and ambitions.

The curtains eventually came down on  this year’s Australian Open encapsulating some compelling and breathtaking tennis, with Novak Djokovic, the Great Serb, towering above everyone else.

A true legend.
