“ I care for myself by ….”, was the theme of the Doodle for Google contest conducted by Google this year for Grade 12 students in the USA. Sophie Araque-Liu from the Martin County High School, Florida won the contest and alongwith it a $30k scholarship for her education and a $50k technical package for her School to be spent on technology upgradation.
A Giogle Doodle is a temporary alteration to the logo of Google to commemorate and celebrate important historical events, achievements, personalities and themes by way of a creative expression. The Doodles are extremely interesting and apart from a visual treat they are imaginative and informative at the same time.
Sophie Araque-Liu’s Doodle was an extremely heartwarming picture of her hugging her mother placed in the centre of the word ‘Google’.
“ I care for myself by accepting others’ care for me. Often I struggle to shoulder a burden on my own, and forget that I have so many people like my mom, who care about me and want to help me. Opening up and letting others support me not only relieves my stress – it lets me tackle things I could never do on my own.” Some wise words from a young Sophie and a superb explanation of the Doodle she envisaged and brought to life on paper.
Whatever Sophie has tried to convey is extremely relevant in today’s times, wherein nuclear urban families, a demanding internal and external environment, shrinking circles, leave many in distress without anyone to go to. Parents living in far away towns sometimes become inaccessible to their children for immediate attention and vice versa too parents are unable to reach out to their children when in need.
It therefore becomes so critical that we shed living in seclusion by sharing a good relationship with relatives, neighbours and friends. Help them out when they ask for help and seek their support when the need arises. The deadly pandemic brought communities together not so long ago. Irrespective of caste or colour people were seen helping others for the sake of humanity.
The Doodle from Sophie has not only touched several hearts across the world but has also reassured people that they are ‘ Not alone ‘ and help for them is never far away.
I am sure many would have embraced their mothers seeing the Doodle and would have either helped or sought help. Well done Sophie Araque-Liu for bringing a positive change in many lives and that in my opinion is a massive achievement in itself.

The ‘Doodle for Google ‘ contest highlighted by Riz Khan was news for most of us.
