The Points of Reference

Never Say Die’, ‘ Keep Trying ‘,’ Fight to the Finish’, ‘ Never lose Hope ‘, etc etc, are some of the many inspirational phrases which are used almost daily in the world to motivate people, helping them to cling on to hope thus  keeping  them going, in whatever circumstances they are . However, there is no denying the fact that these heavy phrases are easier said than implemented  and therefore to make them look realistic and achievable we need points of reference, I.e, we need stories of those  mortals who have have brought these phrases to life.

One such story unfolded again at the Santiago Bernabeu, the home of Real Madrid Football Club, on the 5th of May, which literally compelled me to write this post. Real Madrid pulled off another unrealistic, unbelievable victory in the Semi Final of the Champions League  against the favourites Manchester City, when it seemed all dead and buried. The victory sent the massive Madrid crowd into absolute raptures. There were mixed scenes but both heart rending. The players had tears from both sides. Tears of joy for Real Madrid and tears of heart break for the Manchester City players.

The rejoicing Real Madrid fans

To say that it has been an exceptional year for Real Madrid, would be an understatement. They have won their domestic Championship La Liga this year already and on three occasions have come back from hopeless situations to turn the tables on their opponents in the Champions League.  Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City have suffered big time at the hands of the unwielding, never say die spirit of the Real Madridians, and in the context of this post, Real Madrid at its players are the points of reference I am referring too.

I have always wondered why is it that these  players ( not only in football but other sports and professions too ) are paid obscene amounts in salaries. Why is it that so much wealth is showered on them. The fact that they are popular and attract masses to come and watch them and churn in a lot of money for their clubs, bosses and brands which they endorse, is not the only reason for their fat pay cheques. They bring cheer and happiness to the lives of millions. They have the ability to uplift sinking spirits. They give hope, heart and strength to people in their lifelong struggles and eventually  give life to the several inspiring phrases I mentioned earlier. They are indeed the points of reference which the world looks up to and this is no mean achievement. They  truly deserve the billions they get.

Let’s be it our endeavour to bring happiness, cheer and hope to the lives of people around us. Let’s strive hard to become a point of reference and make this world a better place to live in.

Last but not the least, there is a point of reference which does not need billions, does not need accolades, but still continues to work selflessly and tirelessly to make better the lives of people it touches. The  Mother is this point of reference, the torch bearer of the never say die spirit.
