The year 2018 was a very interesting year for me and I remember it for three events which happened that year. The first being my elevation to a much broader role in the organisation . The scope and span of influence of the role was much larger and therefore much more challenging. I was excited to take up the role and though there was added stress, just the fact that I was considered for it made me extremely focussed on the challenge at hand.
The second event was the Football World Cup and being a sports enthusiast I was really looking forward to it . My most interesting memory of the World Cup was watching the Semi-Final between France and Belgium with a bunch of pumped up French tourists at a hotel in Jodhpur . My support for the Belgium team just died down in the din created by the deafening cheers of the French as they beat Belgium to make it to the Finals, which they eventually won with ease and Kylian Mbappe, the teenaged striker of France became an International rage overnight.

The Third such event was me getting hooked to the song Girls Like You by the famous Pop band Maroon 5. The song was released in May 2018 and went on to become a chartbuster across continents , breaking several records on its way. Though the song had good lyrics , some great music and extremely well sung by Adam Levine ; what propelled the number to dizzying heights in my opinion was the Video of the song . An ensemble cast of 27 successful women including the fierce Rap of Cardi B made a huge difference. The array of successful actresses, singers, anchors, activists , politicians etc made the Video enticing and extremely watchable.
The song was akin to a tribute to the fearless, enterprising, independent and the all conquering spirit of women and in particular of the cast in the Video. The world too celebrated this tribute with a billion views, which set me thinking . It is such an irony that though the world celebrates successful women with gusto and heaps praises in their wake , there still exists inequality and imbalance between males and females across the world.

In some parts of the globe the inequality is being largely diffused and the imbalance slowly reaching equilibrium, but there still exists a gap. And there are still swathes of land in this world, where there is a deep chasm when it comes to gender equality and an imbalance which is distinctly skewed against the fairer sex , be it professional opportunities, decision making, education, safety and security . We love to celebrate their success but are a bit stingy when it comes to the process required for this success. This is so conflicting , but in my view , it’s fairly true.
However, with the world shrinking and opportunities galore and a hugely informed society , we would be celebrating many successful women in the years to come and would be extremely supportive of the process too. There is no doubt that the balance is slowly but steadily tilting.
With the release of the song ‘ Lost ‘ by Maroon 5, a few months ago, they have become my favourite Band. The song is terrific and both an audio and visual spectacle. The Band has been the motivation of writing this blog and so are all the Girls who are trying their best in making a name for themselves. I still keep watching ‘ Girls Like You ‘.
Keep going Girls.

The world needs more people like you
