These are the words of Fabian Hurzeler, the Head Coach of Brighton, on Danny Welbeck’s move to Chelsea from Brighton.
Danny Welbeck played a crucial role in the rise of Brighton since he joined the Seagulls on a free transfer in October 2020. His contribution of 51 goals and 18 assists in 201 appearances in all competitions has made Brighton one of the most consistent clubs in the EPL since their promotion to top-flight football.
A player with terrific natural skill, blistering pace, a ferocious knack of scoring goals, a strong physical presence and the ability to play in different positions, Danny Welbeck was and is one heck of a player. No wonder, Chelsea were more than happy to sign him even at the age of 35 in the twilight of his career.
Danny Welbeck, nurtured by Manchester United under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, established himself as a footballer of merit in his 6 years at United ( 2008-14). He played a crucial role in United’s 2012-13 Premier League Triumph.
Welbeck moved to Arsenal in 2014 and was with the Gunners till 2019. He played his role and was an integral part of the FA Cup-winning squads in 2015 and 2017. However, his stint at Arsenal was beset with injuries which virtually threatened his career. He moved to Watford for a year and then settled at Brighton in an extraordinary boost to his career.
Welbeck’s ability to survive over serious knee injuries and a broken ankle with his sheer tenacity has helped him remain at the pinnacle of the sport. His intelligence in adjusting his game to suit his body has paid him rich dividends. His once blistering pace might have deserted him, but his ability to score inside the box has only sharpened over the years. No wonder his departure from Brighton has pained the Head Coach.
Chelsea, who have been struggling with their performance in the EPL, were quick to latch on to Danny to add more depth and experience for the upcoming season.
Danny Welbeck is not just a player, but a role model for several youngsters taking up the sport. He has defied everything to stay relevant, which is such an inspiration.
